Kingsbury Primary School, which opened in 1961, is situated in a self-contained, close-knit residential area, is surrounded by a green belt of parklands, sporting fields, the expansive grounds of La Trobe University and wild-life reserve. It is well-served by transport and community facilities. These, together with the excellent resources of Bundoora Park, are used extensively by the school.
The multicultural school population of over 230 students is regarded as a positive feature of our school. The school has a medium to high proportion of non-English speaking background students.
A quarter of the school population was born overseas coming from sixteen different countries. A sizable proportion of the student population travels from suburbs outside Kingsbury. This figure is expected to gradually increase in the future with new housing estates being developed in Gresswell Grange, Mount Cooper and Springthorpe Estate.
Our school motto, "Aim to Achieve", reflects a commitment to the provision of excellent innovative education for all students, to promoting high standards of achievement, excellence and effort in all areas of curriculum. Students are encouraged to become active, independent learners able to participate in a cooperative classroom environment and to take responsibility for their own learning. Our talented and professional staff work together to provide a positive and challenging learning environment which encourages students to strive for continuous improvement, and thus building a strong foundation for life-long and life-wide learning.
Our school has a strong partnership between parents, teachers, and students, based on mutual trust, respect and open communication among all groups. There are many opportunities for parents to participate in their child’s education and become involved in the life of the school. As well as an active School Council and Parent and friends group, parents assist in classrooms, help with sport and excursions, support homework and study. Communication is maintained through newsletters, interviews, written reports, open days and many parent forums.
Our school has a strong tradition of curriculum planning and development, in which teaching and learning practices are regularly evaluated and improved in line with current educational thinking. We offer a broad, balanced and sequential curriculum based upon the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and staff devised through-lines of inquiry, which consist of Global Sustainability, Cultural Diversity, Technology and Futures Thinking and Creativity. An integrated approach to curriculum planning and learning ensures that Literacy and Numeracy are emphasised and developed across all curriculum areas. A strong emphasis is also placed on Learning Technologies across the curriculum to support and enhance learning.
We provide a range of enrichment and support programs in the Arts (Music, Visual Arts and Performing Arts), Integration, Perceptual Motor Program, Sunsmart, Buddy Program, Life Education, "Bounce Back" Resiliency Program, cross-age tutoring, camping and excursions, inter-school sport, gymnastics and swimming, Bike Education and multi-age activity days. A strong emphasis is placed on providing a varied and challenging Physical and Sport Education for all students.
