The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) was developed by Berry Street to help strengthen educational outcomes for all students. It offers hope and healing for any student impacted by trauma and stress and enables all students to flourish when the school community is held to high expectations and when students receive support that best meets their individual goals.

Teachers also flourish when they are supported in their own learning, growth and wellbeing.

BSEM ensures that each classroom is strength-based and differentiated to meet the need of all. With this in mind, the following principles and values underpin BSEM at Kingsbury:

  • Strong relationships matter. Every student has an advocate.
  • Teachers make a difference.
  • Every lesson supports academic and emotional learning.
  • Learning is visible and all students can be successful.
  • The classroom is based on structure and support.
  • All students have opportunity to understand themselves and how they learn.

The BSEM is made up of key domains. So far Kingsbury has covered the domains of Body and Relationship.

Body:

  • De-escalation
  • Present, Centred and Grounded
  • Mindfulness
  • Self-regulation

Relationship:

  • Attachment
  • Unconditional Positive Regard
  • Personal power
  • Empathy
  • Whole-school relationships.

Students at Kingsbury now understand the language of BSEM. They know how to de-escalate, they have Safety Plans and they have developed respectful relationships with others. Please ask your child or talk to their teacher if you would like examples of BSEM activities that are taught in our school.
